About the Southwest Desert Classic

A Utah Tradition Born from Grit and Community

Back in 2012, there were almost no futurity races in Utah. Riders had to travel long distances or skip the futurity scene altogether. Vickie and Paul Solmonsen saw that gap and decided to fill it with something better.

“There wasn’t any futurities in Utah to speak of, so we decided to open up the breeders option, generate some money, and create a fun futurity for the riders here.”

What began in the warm climate of St. George has grown into one of the most recognized and respected barrel racing events in the region. Over the years, the Classic found a steady rhythm in Cedar City and South Jordan, where the ground, facilities, and hospitality are second to none.

Built for Riders, by Riders

The Solmonsens have spent their lives around horses. They understand the long days, the early mornings, and the love of competition that drives this sport. Their goal was simple: create a race where everyone feels welcome, where the ground is fair, and where the payouts are worth the miles.

“We want to be known for good ground, affordable fees and stalls, and that everybody’s friendly and made welcome,” Vickie said.

That philosophy has carried through every race, from the first trailer that rolled in more than a decade ago to the families who now plan their year around these events.

More Than a Barrel Race

The Classic is known for its groomed ground and strong payouts, but what makes it stand out is its spirit. Families come together for a weekend of competition, laughter, and late-night stories under the lights. Riders of every level have a place to shine, from Peewees flipping coins in the Heads-or-Tails game to pros chasing big times in the futurity.

“We try to be family-oriented,” Vickie said. “Our competition runs from world-class down to the Peewees. There’s something in there for everybody.”

Ground You Can Trust

Paul takes pride in the arena footing. He oversees the prep at every venue to make sure riders can trust each stride. In his world, good ground isn’t optional, it’s the standard.

“If your ground’s bad, it takes you a long time to get over it,” Vickie said.

That attention to detail has earned the Classic a loyal following and praise from riders across the country. Some have come from as far as Texas, Hawaii, and even Canada, just to compete and experience the atmosphere.

Family at the Core

For Vickie and Paul, barrel racing is a family tradition. Vickie grew up hauling horses with her parents and sisters every weekend. Now, she and Paul have built an event that gives other families the same chance to make memories together.

“It always makes me feel good when people tell us the ground was great, they felt welcome, and they’ll be back next year,” Vickie said.

The Southwest Desert Classic isn’t just a race. It’s a community that celebrates hard work, good horses, and the people who love them.
