How the Program Works
The Southwest Desert Classic Breeders Incentive was created to support the breeders and riders who keep barrel racing strong. Each year, stallion owners can participate in two ways: by selling a breeding in the annual Stallion Auction or by paying in as a Reference Sire. Either option makes their offspring eligible to compete in the Classic’s Breeders Incentive race.
“The stallion either has to sell through the auction or pay in as a reference sire so that your horse is eligible."
That simple rule keeps the program open, fair, and valuable for everyone involved.
Rewards for Stallion Owners
When a horse from an enrolled stallion wins, both the owner of the horse and the stallion owner earn payouts. Twenty percent of auction proceeds are reserved for stallion-owner paybacks, while the rest is added to race purses and prizes.
“We hold out twenty percent of the auction money and send that back to the stallion owner. We’ve sent out some pretty good checks over the years.”
These checks often range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on entries and results. Stallions like Ain’t Seen Nothin Yet, The Goodbye Lane, and Mr. Soul have all earned repeat recognition through the program.
Why It Matters
The incentive isn’t just about money. It’s about keeping quality horses and dedicated breeders connected to a community that values fairness and opportunity.
“Most of them do it out of the goodness of their heart. They get advertisement and a chance for payback, but mostly they just want to help the industry.”
By enrolling, stallion owners gain exposure on the Classic’s website, social media, and event materials. Riders benefit from additional added money and the chance to compete with horses from proven programs, all tied into the broader race schedule and events.
For Riders
Any horse sired by an enrolled stallion is eligible to run in the Breeders Incentive class. The division is open to horses of all ages, giving competitors more chances to earn back money and stay active in the sport.
“We opened it up so horses didn’t age out. That way the stallions’ offspring can keep running and winning.”

A Tradition That Gives Back
Since its start, the Breeders Incentive has grown steadily thanks to loyal stallion owners and supportive riders. The Classic remains one of the few programs that puts money directly back into both sides of the industry, rewarding those who raise good horses and those who ride them.
“We’re not in it to get rich. We just want to give back as much as we can.”
