Southwest Desert Classic - FAQs

Q: What makes the Southwest Desert Classic stand out?
A: The Classic began as one of the few futurity options in Utah and has grown into a respected event that still feels personal and down-to-earth. Riders say it is the kind of show where the competition is strong but the people are kind.
“We just tried to make a fun race where everyone can come and run."
Q: How do I sign up for a race?
A: Entry links are posted about a month before each event and stay open until the Monday before race weekend. Late entries are accepted until the first class begins depending on space. See the Race Schedule for details.
“We usually draw the Wednesday before the race, so everything’s ready by the weekend.
Q: What’s included in the different classes?
A: The Classic offers Futurity, Derby, Maturity, Open, Youth, Senior, and Peewee divisions. Classes are separated by horse age or rider age, giving everyone a fair chance to compete.
“We go down to the Peewees, and we try to include everybody.”
Q: Do I need to pay a nomination fee?
A: Yes, but only for the Breeders Incentive Race. The Classic does not charge nomination fees. Riders only pay if they actually compete.
“We keep it simple. If you run, you pay. If not, you don’t owe anything."
Q: What should I know about the ground conditions?
A: Paul oversees every bit of ground prep. He and the arena teams work to keep the footing consistent safe and fair. Learn more on the About page.
“Paul’s on top of it. He knows how important that ground is, and he makes sure it’s right.”
Q: Is there a dress code for riders?
A: Saturday and Sunday require Western attire including long-sleeve shirts boots and a hat or helmet. Fridays are casual.
“We’re too busy to police every shirt, but we like to keep it respectful."
Q: What’s the atmosphere like at the Classic?
A: The event feels more like a community gathering than a competition. Families share coffee and donuts kids play games and everyone roots for each other. More on the Family and Atmosphere page.
“It’s friendly and family-run. We’ve had people drive from New Jersey and even fly from Hawaii just to be here.”
Q: Where can I find the full set of rules?
A: The complete rule list is posted on the Race Schedule page and available at the show office during each event. If something is unclear, check with race management before your run.
“It’s all on the website,” Vickie said with a laugh. “But people still like to call and ask anyway!”
