Family and Atmosphere

A Place Where Everyone Belongs

The Southwest Desert Classic is more than a race weekend. It is a family reunion for the people who love barrel racing. From the Peewees trotting their first pattern to seasoned futurity champions, everyone has a place in the arena.

“We want people to feel like they are part of something. When you drive in, you are welcome. We know your name, we ask how your horses are doing, and we are glad you came.”

Community First

Every Classic is built around connection. Families haul in together, share coffee in the mornings, and cheer each other on through every run. The Solmonsens believe that competition does not have to come at the expense of kindness.

“It always makes me smile when I see people helping each other in the alleyway. That is what this is supposed to be about.”

From setup crews to photographers, everyone on-site is part of the same team. The atmosphere is relaxed, organized, and full of laughter between runs.

Games, Prizes, and Peewee Joy

The Classic keeps things fun for the kids too. Between races, the Peewee riders take part in the popular Heads or Tails game, flipping coins to win prizes that range from toys to bikes. It is one of the weekend’s highlights and a big reason families keep coming back.

“The Peewees win little 12-volt scooters, we are going to have some fun with those. Every kid gets something. They are part of it too.”

Visitors from All Over

What began as a Utah-only event now draws riders from across the country. Some have hauled from Texas and others have flown in from Hawaii and Canada just to be part of the Classic. Many of them say it is the friendly feel, not just the prize money, that brings them back year after year.

“We even had someone from New Jersey, those parents are amazing! They say the people here are what make it special.”

The Spirit of the Classic

The Solmonsens built the Classic on three values: fairness, friendliness, and family. Those principles still guide every event. Whether you are a first-timer or a long-time competitor, you will find the same energy waiting at every gate.

“We want to be known for good ground, affordable fees, and being friendly. That is what makes people want to come back.”
